The European External Action Service (EEAS) was launched on 1st December 2010, although it will only become operational in January 2011. The EEAS will work as a sort of Ministry of External Affairs for the EU, giving coherence to the EU’s foreign policy.
The official launch was discreet, with only some ambassadors invited to a low key event in Commission headquarters and there was little press coverage. During the month of December, High Representative Catherine Ashton has been appointing the high level officials that will lead the Service. Its final structure, however, remains unknown, even for those within the EU institutions.
